Contractors Insurance

Contractors & Tradesmen Program

As a contractor, you need specific insurance for your business and line of work. More importantly, you need an insurance agency that knows what coverages you need. Blue River Insurance Group has several options specifically designed for all kinds of contractors (Builders, Carpenters, Electricians, Fencing, Heating & Cooling Technicians, Painters, Plumbers, Roofers, and more).

Liability

Commercial General Liability Standard liability coverage needed by business owners to protect them financially against liability claims and lawsuits. This is a comprehensive coverage providing protection for bodily injury (Bl) and property damage (PD) arising out of business operations including premises, operations, products, completed operations, and advertising and personal injury.

Contractors Professional Liability (Errors & Omissions) Optional liability endorsement available for contractors who need to protect themselves from claims brought against them by the customers they work for. If work is performed that causes damage from negligence, this coverage may be needed. If a faulty product is installed or a product is installed incorrectly, significant damages could result. A dispute or complaint can be very costly to a small business owner having this coverage in place could prevent financial hardship.

Subcontractor Caused Property Damage Optional liability endorsement that provides coverage for claims when a contractor is legally obligated to pay for property damage caused by a subcontractor. (*Not available in all states)

Voluntary Damage to Property of Others Optional liability endorsement that provides coverage for property damage caused by the contractor to a customer’s home or other property. If a contractor is doing work at someone’s home and damages their property, this coverage would pay for expenses needed to make the repair.

Employment Practices Liability Insurance Optional liability endorsement that protects business owners against lawsuits or claims brought against them by their employees. With legislation potentially favoring employees, a business owner needs protection because claims can be very costly. Even if the business owner is innocent, legal fees and defense costs could add up, affecting the business significantly. Potential employment practices claims include harassment, retaliation, negligence, libel, slander, discrimination, misrepresentation, mental anguish, failure to promote, wrongful termination, wrongful discipline, emotional distress and defamation.

Hired and Non-Owned Auto Liability Optional liability endorsement that covers bodily injury and property damage caused by a vehicle that is hired by the business owner, or by an employee of the business using their own vehicle. Contractors are often driving to and from job sites, running errands or making trips to the lumber shop or hardware store, and in many cases they are driving vehicles that may not have the proper coverage.

Property

Commercial Property Provides coverage for property owned by the business, including buildings, other structures, business personal property and equipment, from accidental direct physical loss.

Additional Property Coverages This is an optional coverage package that provides multiple property coverages and enhancements combined into one package at an affordable price.  These coverages are common to most kinds of businesses and help make sure basic losses will be covered. Coverages include business income, glass coverage, electronic data equipment, signs, employee dishonesty and debris removal.

Inland Marine

Contractors Equipment Provides coverage for large mobile equipment that is owned or rented. Common kinds of contractors’ equipment include backhoes, bulldozers, skid steers and excavators.

Tools and Equipment Provides coverage for small “portable” equipment such as tools and other small equipment. Common kinds of tools and equipment include ladders, drills, saws and other small tools used in the construction industry.

Builders Risk This is a special kind of property coverage that is designed to cover property while it is in the process of being constructed. Builders and remodelers will need this because they often have materials that are not part of the home yet, and they need special coverage in case something happens to those materials.
